If you’re even the least bit into fashion, you know how important September is. New York, London, Milan and Paris are the hosts to many designer collections who are as eager as always to present something new and fresh for spring and summer of the following year. This is the first of four post in which we will discuss and dissect each fashion week.
This year, New York hosted more than 200 renowned designer shows for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and other independent, up-and-coming designers as well. As always, designers like Donna Karan, Diane von Furstenberg, Badgley Mischka and Oscar de la Renta set trends that will be very popular and easy to wear next year. Lucky for us, these trends can be used year round due to our tropical climate and not just 6 or 4 months of the year. And while we saw a lot of pastels and muted neutrals, this season is full of reds, yellows, blues and greens in more vivid tones than last year.
These are the trends that were most present in the collections
-Black and white
This trend was the most present in almost every single show. While using white in spring collections is nothing new, combining it heavily with black is not something that we’ve seen a lot of recently, at least not for S/S collections.
-Urban Sportwear
This trend worked really well with the colors we mentioned above. We saw sequined track pants, hoodies, shorts, sneakers, and even ball caps on the runway. This will work perfectly for people who love being comfortable but still stylish. However, make sure to add some pieces that make the outfit look put together and not sloppy. It’s all in the accessories for this one- high heels, belts and purses make perfect complements.
-Belts and knotted tops/dresses
This is the second most present trend this season. BCBG was the trendsetter on Day 1, followed by Zimmerman, Jill Stuart, Donna Karan and even Prabal Gurung. These belts were either Obi-style or regular leather/fabric ones in different sizes and thicknesses, and were seen worn over dresses, coats, tops and a few pants. Since spring is full of soft, flowy layers, belts will help you cinch in your waist and trim your figure. Remember that belts also help you emphasize your chest and shoulders if your top is V neck or low cut :)
-Sheer, iridescent pieces
It’s no surprise that sheer and iridescent pieces were very present this season; these were either in layers of tulle, organza, chiffon and soft silk. These will make perfect pieces for summer.
-Mesh
Mesh is as present as ever. This season, mesh was mixed with cutouts, textures and both heavy and soft fabrics. Custo Barcelona’s collection is the perfect example, as well as some pieces from J. Crew, Phillip Lim and Tommy Hilfiger.
-Crop tops
I’m not the biggest fan of crop tops, but it’s clear that this trend isn’t going anywhere. We saw crop tops paired with skirts, shorts and pants, but also in dresses. Carolina Herrera and Prabal Gurung made flawless and innovative incorporations of this trend into evening gowns, while others like DVF and Naeem Khan stayed with more basic uses but no less beautiful.

Every season, there’s also one, or several trends, that we don’t like, and that’s okay. Trends are not for everyone and how you incorporate them into your daily life is what makes up your style. This season, what we’re NOT loving are the shoes. There were flat shoes EVERYWHERE, and while we love being comfortable, it just doesn’t go well with some dresses and clothes. There were also a lot of platforms, sneakers, chunky heels and sandals. Victoria Beckham presented a very interesting selection of shoes this season, but it’s anyone prerogative if they’re actually wearable or not.
While these trends are more difficult to wear than others, it will be interesting to incorporate them with other items in our closet and experiment a little. These are trends, not rules we ever have to follow, so always wear what makes you feel more beautiful and confident. We’ll also leave you with some of our favorite street style in a gallery bellow.

Si les interesa aunque sea un poquito la moda, ya saben lo importante que es Septiembre. Nueva York, Londres, Milán y París son las cedes para muchas colecciones de diseñadores, quienes están emocionados como siempre en presentar cosas nuevas y frescas para primavera y verano del siguiente año. Este es el primer post de cuatro en el que hablaremos de cada una de las semanas de la moda.
Este año, Nueva York abrió espacio para más de 200 diseñadores reconocidos para Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, y también a otros diseñadores independientes y emergentes. Como siempre, diseñadores como Donna Karan, Diane von Furstenberg, Badgley Mischka y Oscar de la Renta marcaron tendencias que serán muy populares y fácil de usar el próximo año. Para nuestra suerte, estas tendencias pueden usarse durante todo el año por el clima tropical, y no sólo por 4 o 6 meses del año. Y mientras que vimos muchos colores pasteles y neutrales suaves, esta temporada estuvo llena de rojos, amarillos, azules y verdes en tonos más vivos que el año pasado.
Estos son los trends que estuvieron más presentes en las colecciones esta temporada
-Blanco y negro
Esta tendencia estuvo presente en casi cada uno de los shows. Utilizar blanco en colecciones de primavera/verano no es nada nuevo, pero combinarlo con mucho negro no es algo que hemos visto recientemente, o por lo menos no para colecciones de primavera/verano.
-Deportivo urbano
Esta tendencia funciona muy bien con los colores mencionados arriba. Vimos lentejuelas en pants para correr, hoodie, shorts, tennis, e incluso gorras en las pasarelas. Sin embargo, asegúrense de agregar elementos que hagan que el outfit se vea bien armado y no descuidado o desordenado. La clave está en los accesorios- tacones, cinchos y carteras hacen complementos perfectos.
-Cinchos y blusas/vestidos con nudos
Este es el Segundo trend más presente esta temporada. BCBG fue quién marcó la tendencia en el primer día de NYFW, seguido por Jill Stuart, Donna Karan e incluso Prabal Gurung. Estos cinchos eran o en estilo Obi, o regulares de cuero/tela en diferentes grosores, y fueron usados sobre vestidos, abrigos, blusas y unos cuantos pantalones. Ya que la primavera está llena de telas suaves con movimiento, los cinchos ayudarán a marcar la cintura y estilizar la figura. Recuerda que los cinchos también ayudan a dar énfasis a los hombros y pecho cuando hay un escote o cuello en V.
-Transparencias e iridiscencias
No es sorpresa que telas transparentes e iridiscentes estuvieron presentes esta temporada, estas estaban en capas de tul, organza, chifón y seda suave. Estas harán piezas perfectas para el verano .
-Malla
La malla está presente como siempre. Esta temporada, la malla fue mezclada con calados, texturas y telas suaves y gruesas. La colección de Custo Barcelona es el ejemplo perfecto, al igual que algunas piezas de J. Crew, Phillip Lim y Tommy Hilfiger.
-Crop tops
No soy muy fan de los crop tops, pero está claro que este trend no se va a ningún lado. Vimos crop tops acompañados de faldas, shorts, pantalones, pero también vestidos. Carolina Herrera y Prabal Gurung incorporaron esta tendencia de manera impecable e innovadora en sus vestidos de noche, mientras otros como DVF y Naeem Khan se quedaron con aplicaciones más básicas pero no menos bellas.

Cada temporada, siempre hay un trend, o varias, que no nos gusta, y eso está bien. Las tendencias no son para todos, y cómo se incorporan a tu vida cotidiana es lo que determina y hace tu estilo. Esta temporada, lo que NO nos gustó es el calzado. Había zapatos bajos por todos lados, y mientras que nos encanta andar cómodas, simplemente no iban muy bien con cierta ropa y vestidos. Vimos plataformas, tennis, tacones gruesos, wedges y sandalias. Victoria Beckham presentó una selección de zapatos muy interesante esta temporada, pero es decisión de cada quien si realmente son portables o no.
Mientras que hay trends que son más difíciles de usar que otras, será interesante incorporarlas con otras prendas que tengamos en nuestro closet y experimentar un poco. Estos son trends, no reglas que tenemos que seguir, así que siempre usen lo que los haga sentir seguros y bellos.
